In our tests, Skillz stood out for its wide portfolio of peer-to-peer skill games, spanning all the mainstream skill game genres and many niche categories. The skill games and eSports are designed with fair skill-based gaming principles, and the match making also feels clear and fair.

You can play for real money, earning Bonus Cash and Ticketz to enhance your bankroll, or play for free with the virtual Z currency. Though real money prizes can only be won through real money modes. It suits players who are looking for an immersive experience with unique downloadable games.

1. Where You Can Play – State Availability

Skillz is available in all the states where skill games are currently legal. It provides real money skill games in 45 states, excluding Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana and South Dakota. In those states, you can still access the free modes. Also, skill games involving cards are restrcted in Maine and Indiana, and the game Dominoes Gold is not available in New Jersey.

There are no restrictions on playing games for free, but there are restrictions when playing with Bonus Cash.

2. How Skillz Works as a Skill Games App

Skillz is a skill games platform owned by Skillz Inc. that started launching apps in 2012. There’s no purchase necessary to play games, but you need to make a purchase to play real money games to win cash prizes. The welcome bonus is available to all players, but game restrictions apply in some states. Make sure to read the terms and conditions to see if you’re eligible.

• Z Coins is considered the official virtual currency and lets you enter into non-cash tournaments. You’re awarded for playing tournaments, and you can also earn them through trophies and the leaderboard. You can’t purchase Z coins, they have no monetary value, and you can’t win real money prizes in this game mode.
• Bonus Cash is used for cash competitions and can be turned into Ticketz. To play for real money, you need to purchase a package, and once you do, you can use the money to enter cash tournaments to win real prizes.
• Tickets are the third currency, which is redeemable for cash prizes, gift cards, or a Porsche. To earn Ticketz, you need to play cash matches.
• Cash Balance displays the real money you have on your account. This is used to buy entry fees to H2H games, bracket tournaments and traditional real money tournaments at Skillz.

Skillz offers both real money and just for fun skill games. Not all game formats are available in the fun mode using Z Coins. It is used to practise games and build skills, or just playing for fun without risking any real money.

The real money modes require entry fees that you pay from your Cash Balance. You are playing to win your opponent’s entry fee in H2H games, or to take a share of the prize pool in tournament modes. The Bonus Cash is essentially a type of site credit or bonus funds, which can be used to buy entry fees but cannot be redeemed for real money.

Ticketz are similar to comp points or XP, which you can earn for completing Daily Challenges, claiming Trophies, and through real money gameplay.

Skillz is a truly unique experience, with competition against other players as the main focus. The platform connects you to hundreds of game apps that you can download individually. You can get in on a variety of competitions against other players and earn rewards for winning. The Leaderboard awards you medals and rewards based on where you place, and the more you play, the higher the rewards. Expect regular reward drops and plenty of deals to get more Bonus Cash.

Trophies: Claim trophies for the status among your peers while also earning free Zs, Bonus Cash, or Ticketz. To claim trophies, complete activities or make achievements.

Request free entries via email: You can email Skillz to request a free entry into a cash tournament during a promotion period. You must send it from the email address associated to your Skillz account and include your username, user ID, phone number, mailing address, and proper date of birth.

Refer-a-friend: If your friend sign up with your unique referral promo code and make a deposit, you both get $1 in Bonus Cash.

VIP Program: To move up the 6-tier VIP Program, you need to do so with Ticketz. Each tier offers generous rewards; for example, the Silver Tier comes with a 2x Ticketz multiplier, allowing you to double your Ticketz. Make it to the top level and get as much as 6x Ticketz and high-level perks if you maintain 800,000 Ticketz monthly.

The Skillz sign-up process is as easy as they come, taking just a few minutes. There are just a few steps, and your welcome bonus is automatically added once you complete registration.

It took around 2 minutes to sign up on my mobile device, and once I was done, I had 2,500 Z Coins. 4.1 Game Types and Volume

We tried around 50 games on Skillz, including bingo, card games, arcade games, eSports, and puzzle games. There are also games that you would see at conventional casinos, like blackjack, slots and roulette, but these have been tweaked and “skillified” to rely less on pure chance, and integrate skill based elements like puzzle solving, tile matching, and other features.

4.2 Match Making

Skillz creates matches by taking your skill level at the start of a game and pairing you with a player of the same skill level. This is mostly done with asynchronous gameplay, meaning you are not necessarily playing at the exact same time as your opponent. Instead, there is a Host and a Challenger. You launch a game and if there are no Host scores from similarly skilled players, your round will become the Host. Then, when it is finished, your score is submitted and the outcome remains in Pending status. When a player of the same skill level launches a game, they become the challenger, and when their round is finished then the scores are matched, and the winner is determined.

The perks of this is that you never need to wait too long to play a game. Your score is taken before the round so however you perform in that round won’t impact your skill level. The starting conditions of the game and the RNG seed are also saved, and the Challenger will receive the same conditions for fairness. Skillz has a zero tolerance possibility for cheating, and it monitors each match to ensure no player is using bots or scripts to beat the game. Furthermore, your game history is saved and you can even watch replays on matches for fairness.

4.3 Game Modes

The games at Skillz all have to pass a skill test, ensuring that skill is the primary factor that determines outcomes and not an RNG. The operator uses a randomness replacement engine to ensure that less is left to chance, and the scoring/outcome is primarily based on your skill level and how you perform. When you open any game, you will arrive at a lobby where you can pick your game mode.

If cash games are allowed in your state, and you have money on your Cash Balance, you can go ahead and pay an entry fee to enter a real money game mode. There are Head to Head games, bracket tournaments with fixed number of entries, and tournament modes with infinite entry possibilities. At the bottom of the list, you will find the free practise games that you pay Zs to enter. Some cash games also have other game modes like VS friends or Live Games that are not conducted with asychronous matching.

Mobile play is where it’s at with Skillz, as you’re downloading games straight from the platform. You just click on games to go to a page with features, then click “Get” to download the app. Games load quickly once you download them, and the layout of Skillz makes it easy to find games of interest.

To play in cash tournaments, you’ll need to purchase, which you can do with Visa, Mastercard, Amex, PayPal, Aeropay, or Apple Pay.

The minimum purchase is $10, but it doesn’t include Bonus Cash, so I purchased the $15 package to receive $15 in cash to play with, plus $2 worth of Bonus Cash.

The minimum redemption is $10, but anything under that incurs a $1.50 transaction fee. It’s far better to wait until you have at least $10 worth of Ticketz before requesting a payout. Skillz processes payouts to the payment method you used for a purchase only if you are redeeming an amount equal to or less than what you originally purchased. Otherwise, you’re paid with a check.

Bonus Cash is not redeemable, and trying to redeem it could result in losing the bonus completely. It needs to be played through 1x.

5.4 Payout Expectations

The majority of redemption options take 4 to 6 weeks to receive a prize. This is largely due to the policy of checking your gameplay history and to the fact that Skillz pays players by physical check if you redeem more than you deposited. However, Skillz has added Aeropay and offers players of a certain tier level instant withdrawals. During our tests, we received payouts in 5 weeks. This is extremely slow, so we recommend preplanning withdrawals in advance.

Playing at Skillz is certainly a new and different experience. It has a very streamlined look that’s easy to navigate through with excellent filters for all game types.
